Four Pillars Of Destiny (Bazi): How To Read Your Chart + The 2027 Ding Wei Year

October 7, 2024October 28, 2026
four pillars of destiny bazi chinese match reading

The Four Pillars of Destiny, called Bazi 八字, turns your birth year, month, day, and hour into a chart of eight Chinese characters. Ever wonder why you keep running into the same patterns in love, work, or money? Here’s how to find your four pillars, read the basics, and see how the 2027 Fire Goat year meets your chart.

Key Takeaways For The Four Pillars Of Destiny

Bazi means “eight characters”: four pillars (year, month, day, hour), each made of one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch. The day pillar’s stem is you, and it’s called your Day Master. For Bazi, the 2027 year pillar is Ding Wei 丁未, and the new Bazi year starts at Li Chun on February 4, 2027.

  • Eight characters tell a story. Each pillar looks at a different part of your life, from family roots to later years.
  • You are the Day Master. Read it first, then see what surrounds it.
  • Your chart doesn’t change. The luck cycles around it do, and that’s why a year can feel easy or hard.
  • Bazi is a guide, not a verdict. It describes tendencies and timing, not fixed fate.
  • It builds on the zodiac. The animal in your year pillar is your Chinese zodiac sign. See my Chinese zodiac guide.

What Is Bazi (The Four Pillars Of Destiny)?

Bazi, also called the Four Pillars of Destiny or Chinese Bazi, is a Chinese astrology system that maps your birth moment into eight characters. Those characters come from the traditional calendar, which counts time with Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. The idea is that the energy of the moment you were born leaves a pattern, like a fingerprint.

Bazi is built on two big ideas: Yin Yang 阴阳, the balance of soft and active energy, and Wu Xing 五行, the five elements. Your chart shows which elements you have lots of, which are missing, and how they push and pull each other.

Picture two friends born on the same day in the same city. They share a year, month, and day, but one was born at breakfast and the other at midnight. Their hour pillars differ, so their charts differ, and Bazi says that’s why they feel like very different people.

What Does Bazi 八字 Mean?

Bazi 八字 means “eight characters” in Chinese. Four pillars times two characters each equals eight. You may also see it called Four Pillars astrology, 4 pillars of destiny, or the Chinese birth chart.

Bazi 2027: What Does The Ding Wei 丁未 Year Pillar Mean?

In Bazi, 2027 is the Ding Wei 丁未 year: the Heavenly Stem Ding is Yin Fire, and the Earthly Branch Wei is the Goat, whose element is Earth. The Bazi year begins at Li Chun on February 4, 2027, two days before Chinese New Year on February 6. Everyone’s chart meets this same year pillar, so it’s called the annual pillar (流年 Liu Nian).

You may see this called “yearly Bazi.” Think of the annual pillar as the weather and your chart as the house. The weather is the same for everyone on your street, but how it feels depends on the house you live in.

How Does A Fire Year Meet Your Day Master?

A Fire year feels different depending on your Day Master element. Find yours in the table below. If you don’t know it yet, the next sections show you how.

Your Day Master ElementWhat A Fire Year DoesPlain-English Feel
WoodWood feeds Fire (you create and give)Productive but tiring, so protect your energy
FireFire meets Fire (more of you)Confidence and competition, so watch burnout
EarthFire feeds Earth (you’re supported)Help, learning, and steadier ground
MetalFire melts Metal (pressure)Rules, bosses, and deadlines feel sharper
WaterWater controls Fire (you manage it)Chances to earn and grow, but they take effort

This is the simple version. A full reading also looks at your other seven characters and your current luck pillar. If you’re a Goat, 2027 is also your Ben Ming Nian, and the Tai Sui for the year is General Miao Bing. See my Fan Tai Sui 2027 guide for the full story.

What Are The 2027 Bazi Months?

The 2027 Bazi months follow the solar terms, not the calendar months. Each month pillar starts on a “Jie” solar term, and the 12 months for the Ding Wei year run like this.

The Four Pillars: Year, Month, Day, And Hour

The four pillars are the year, month, day, and hour of your birth, and each one points to a different part of your life. Together they cover your roots, your growth, your core self, and your later years.

PillarWhat It RepresentsTraditional Life Area
Year 年Your backdrop and your generationFamily roots, early childhood, ancestors
Month 月Your toolkit and upbringingParents, career, young adult years
Day 日YouYour personality and your closest partner
Hour 时Your future and your legacyChildren, later life, dreams

Year Pillar: Your Life’s Backdrop

The year pillar is the big-picture stage your life plays out on. It shows your family background and the mood of your generation. The branch is your Chinese zodiac animal.

Month Pillar: Your Natural Toolkit

The month pillar shows the talents and resources you were born with. It’s also considered the strongest influence in a chart, because it sets the “season” you were born in.

Day Pillar: The Star Of The Show (Your Day Master)

The day pillar is you. Its stem is your Day Master (日主), the core of your personality, and the rest of the chart is read in relation to it. Its branch is traditionally linked to your closest relationships.

Hour Pillar: Your Hidden Future

The hour pillar describes your later years, your children, and the dreams you grow into. It’s also the pillar people most often lose, because many people don’t know their birth hour. You can still read the other three.

Heavenly Stems And Earthly Branches 天干地支

Each pillar has two characters: one Heavenly Stem on top and one Earthly Branch below. There are 10 stems and 12 branches, and they combine into the 60-year sexagenary cycle, which also drives the Tai Sui generals. Each stem carries an element and either Yin or Yang energy, and each branch is one of the 12 zodiac animals.

How To Find Your Four Pillars

To find your four pillars, you work out the year, month, day, and hour pillars in turn. The year and hour are easy by hand. The month needs the solar terms, and the day needs a calendar or a calculator, because it follows a 60-day cycle that doesn’t line up with months.

How Do I Find My Year Pillar In Bazi?

For the stem, look at the last digit of your birth year in the stem table above. For the branch, divide the year by 12 and use the remainder: 4 is Rat, 5 is Ox, and so on in zodiac order, with remainder 0 for Monkey, 1 for Rooster, 2 for Dog, and 3 for Pig.

Try 1985. The last digit 5 gives the stem Yi 乙. Divide 1985 by 12 and the remainder is 5, which gives the branch Chou 丑, the Ox. So 1985 is a Yi Chou 乙丑 year.

Now 2027. The last digit 7 gives Ding 丁, and the remainder of 2027 divided by 12 is 11, which gives Wei 未, the Goat. So 2027 is a Ding Wei 丁未 year, just like the table near the top shows.

There’s one catch that trips up many online calculators: the Bazi year starts at Li Chun, around February 4, not on January 1. If you were born in January or before Li Chun in February, use the previous year’s pillar. Someone born on January 20, 1995, for example, has the year pillar of 1994, Jia Xu 甲戌.

How Do I Find My Month Pillar In Bazi?

The month pillar follows the 12 solar-term months, not the calendar months and not the lunar months. Each month starts on a solar term called a “Jie” and runs until the next one.

Earthly BranchBazi MonthSolar Terms It Covers
Yin 寅Month 1Li Chun 立春 to Jing Zhe 惊蛰
Mao 卯Month 2Jing Zhe 惊蛰 to Qing Ming 清明
Chen 辰Month 3Qing Ming 清明 to Li Xia 立夏
Si 巳Month 4Li Xia 立夏 to Mang Zhong 芒种
Wu 午Month 5Mang Zhong 芒种 to Xiao Shu 小暑
Wei 未Month 6Xiao Shu 小暑 to Li Qiu 立秋
Shen 申Month 7Li Qiu 立秋 to Bai Lu 白露
You 酉Month 8Bai Lu 白露 to Han Lu 寒露
Xu 戌Month 9Han Lu 寒露 to Li Dong 立冬
Hai 亥Month 10Li Dong 立冬 to Da Xue 大雪
Zi 子Month 11Da Xue 大雪 to Xiao Han 小寒
Chou 丑Month 12Xiao Han 小寒 to Li Chun 立春

The month’s stem depends on your year’s stem, so it’s easiest to use a calculator or a Chinese almanac for it.

How Do I Find My Day Pillar In Bazi?

The day pillar comes from a continuous 60-day cycle that has run without a break for thousands of years. Every day has its own stem and branch, and after 60 days the cycle starts again. It doesn’t depend on lunar months, which is why you can’t work it out from your birthday alone.

For this one, use a Bazi calculator or a Chinese almanac (万年历). It takes seconds, and it removes the risk of a counting mistake.

How Do I Find My Hour Pillar In Bazi?

The hour pillar uses the Twelve Shi Chen 十二时辰 system, which splits the day into 12 two-hour blocks, one per Earthly Branch. Use the branch table above to find the block that holds your birth time. The hour’s stem then depends on your day pillar’s stem.

Two small tips. The Zi hour starts at 11 p.m., not midnight, so a baby born at 11:30 p.m. falls in the Zi hour. And clock time may differ from the sun’s position where you were born, so some practitioners adjust for longitude and daylight saving time.

Your Day Master 日主: What Your Core Element Says About You

Your Day Master is the stem of your day pillar, and it’s the most personal character in your chart. There are ten possible Day Masters, one for each Heavenly Stem. Each one has its own image in nature and its own gifts and blind spots.

Day MasterElementNature ImageStrengthsWatch For
Jia 甲Yang WoodTall treeUpright, kind, groundedStubborn, slow to bend
Yi 乙Yin WoodFlowers and vinesDiplomatic, flexible, toughCan lean too much on others
Bing 丙Yang FireThe sunWarm, honest, big-heartedImpatient, rushes in
Ding 丁Yin FireCandle flameDetail-minded, courteous, thoughtfulOverthinks, guarded
Wu 戊Yang EarthMountainSteady, reliable, methodicalStubborn, self-satisfied
Ji 己Yin EarthGarden soilCaring, sincere, accommodatingLacks firm boundaries
Geng 庚Yang MetalRaw steelDecisive, loyal, resoluteInflexible, blunt
Xin 辛Yin MetalJewelryRefined, charming, perceptiveSensitive, critical
Ren 壬Yang WaterOcean and riverVersatile, resourceful, easygoingRestless, hard to pin down
Gui 癸Yin WaterMist and rainCalm, reserved, wiseWorries, distrust

Picture a Ding Day Master: a candle in a quiet room. Warm and careful, great with details, and likely to replay a conversation 10 times. That’s the flavor, not the whole picture.

How To Read A Bazi Chart: A Simple Example

To read a Bazi chart, start with your Day Master, count the elements across all eight characters, and see which ones are strong, weak, or missing. Then check how your luck pillar and the year’s pillar interact with them. Expert readers go much deeper, but this gets you started.

Here’s an illustration for a person born on October 12, 1990 at 9:30 a.m. This is a teaching example, not a full reading.

YearMonthDayHour
StemGeng 庚 (Yang Metal)Bing 丙 (Yang Fire)Geng 庚 (Yang Metal)Xin 辛 (Yin Metal)
BranchWu 午 (Horse, Fire)Xu 戌 (Dog, Earth)Xu 戌 (Dog, Earth)Si 巳 (Snake, Fire)

Here are the steps:

  1. Find the Day Master. The day pillar’s stem is Geng 庚, which is Yang Metal, like raw steel.
  2. Count the elements. Using each character’s main element, this chart has 3 Metal, 3 Fire, 2 Earth, and no Wood or Water.
  3. Look at the balance. Fire is plentiful, and Fire melts Metal. Earth supports Metal, and both Wood and Water are missing.
  4. Name what helps. Practitioners look for the element that brings a chart into balance, called the Yong Shen 用神. Choosing it takes judgment about how strong the Day Master is, so I won’t guess here.
  5. Add the timing. Check the current luck pillar and the year pillar. A Fire year like 2027 adds more Fire, so this Metal Day Master would likely feel the pressure described in the table above.

Real readings also use hidden stems inside the branches, the relationships between branches, and the luck pillars. That’s the craft, and it takes years to learn.

What Are Bazi Luck Cycles (大运)?

A luck cycle, called Da Yun 大运, is a 10-year stretch with its own pillar, and it shifts the “weather” around your fixed chart. When you hear “Bazi 10-year luck cycle,” this is what people mean. By tradition, the start age and direction come from your birth date, your gender, and whether your year stem is Yin or Yang, and a calculator works them out for you.

Over a long life you usually pass through eight or nine luck pillars. On top of each one sits the annual pillar, 流年, that changes every year. Your chart stays the same, but the weather keeps moving.

Four Pillars Of Destiny Calculator: What To Check

A good four pillars of destiny calculator asks for your birth date, birth time, and place, then shows your four pillars with their stems and branches. Free tools are a great starting point, but they don’t all give the same answer. Check these four things before you trust a chart:

  • Li Chun. Does the tool start the Bazi year around February 4, not January 1?
  • Solar terms. Does it use solar-term months, not lunar months?
  • Birth time. Did you enter a local time, and does the tool say whether it adjusts for daylight saving or longitude?
  • The 11 p.m. hour. Does it treat 11 p.m. to midnight as part of the Zi hour you intend?

Unsure of your birth hour? Start with the three pillars you have. A calculator can show you the shape of your chart, but reading it well is an art. For a gentle next step, grab my free Five Elements horoscope forecast.

Bazi, The Chinese Zodiac, And Feng Shui

Bazi is one part of a bigger family of Chinese wisdom. The animal in your year pillar is your Chinese zodiac sign, and your element comes from the stem. Your Bazi chart and the year’s pillar are also the base of Tai Sui and Ben Ming Nian, because those ideas come from the same Stem and Branch cycle.

Feng shui uses the same five elements to balance your space. In 2027, for instance, the southwest and northeast are the corners to keep quiet, and the southeast holds the wealth star. For love, look at my Chinese zodiac compatibility charts. For your year ahead, start with the Chinese zodiac horoscope 2027.

Here’s a quick link between the two systems. A “Wood Tiger” is simply a Tiger year with a Wood stem, such as 1974, and it’s often described as courageous, charismatic, and full of vitality.

FAQs About The Four Pillars Of Destiny

What Is Chinese Bazi?

Chinese Bazi, also called the Four Pillars of Destiny, is a Chinese astrology system that uses your birth year, month, day, and hour to build a chart of eight characters. It describes your strengths, your challenges, and the timing of your life. It reads tendencies, not a fixed future.

How Do I Read My Four Pillars Of Destiny Chart?

Start with your Day Master, which is the day pillar’s stem. Count the five elements across all eight characters, see which are strong, weak, or missing, and then check how your luck pillar and the current year’s pillar interact with them. Deeper readings use hidden stems and branch relationships, so a trained Bazi reader adds a lot.

What Is The Bazi Year Pillar For 2027?

The Bazi year pillar for 2027 is Ding Wei 丁未, Yin Fire over the Goat. The Bazi year begins at Li Chun on February 4, 2027, which comes two days before Chinese New Year on February 6.

How Accurate Is Bazi?

Bazi isn’t a precise prediction tool. It’s a guide to personal tendencies and timing, and it works best as a mirror for self-reflection. Many people find it useful, even though it hasn’t been validated by science.

How Important Is My Birth Time For Bazi?

Your birth hour gives you the fourth pillar, so more exact times give more complete readings. If you don’t know it, you can still read the year, month, and day pillars, which hold most of the story.

Can Bazi Help With Relationship Compatibility?

Bazi can show how two charts support or challenge each other, which is useful for understanding relationship patterns. But good relationships depend on many things beyond any chart, including honesty, effort, and care.

Final Thoughts On The Four Pillars Of Destiny

Whether you’re a believer or a skeptic, your four pillars give you a language for the patterns you already feel. Find your Day Master, check what the Fire Goat year means for it, and use the answer to plan with a little more clarity and a lot less worry. That’s the quiet gift of the four pillars of destiny.
